SOME HISTORY OF EUDEMUS:
AN INTERESTING BUT NOTORIOUS FIGURE OF THE
INDO-GREEK EMPIRE.
EUDEMUS WAS ONE OF ALEXANDERS GENERALS, WHO WAS APPOINTED BY THE KING TO COMMAND ALEXANDERS TROOPS LEFT IN INDIA, AFTER THE MURDER OF THE ALEXANDER-APPOINTED SATRAP PHILIP
(SON OF MACHATAS)
BY HIS OWN MERCENARY TROOPS IN 326 B.C.E.
ALEXANDER DISPATCHED LETTERS TO EUDEMUS AND TAXILES TELLING THEM TO TAKE CHARGE OF THE DISTRICT FORMALLY UNDER PHILIP, UNTIL HE COULD SEND A SATRAP TO GOVERN IT.*HOWEVER AFTER ALEXANDERS DEATH IN 323 B.C.E. EUDEMUS MADE HIMSELF MASTER OF THE TERRITORIES OF THE INDIAN KING PORUS, AND TREACHEROUSLY PUT THAT MONARCH TO DEATH. BY THESE MEANS EUDEMUS BECAME VERY POWERFUL, HE TOPPLED TAXILES GAINED CONTROL OF THE SILVER MINES AND MINT AND RULED THE ENTIRE AREA OF THE NORTHERN DOMINIONS OF THE INDUS, DOWN TO THE JUNCTION OF THE INDUS AND THE ACESINES RIVERS UNTIL HIS DEATH IN BATTLE 316 BC.
THIS COIN WAS MINTED DURING THIS ERA OF EUDEMUS
AND HIS RULE.
EUDEMUS,
ONE OF THE FIRST ALEXANDER APPOINTED RULERS
OF THE GREEK EMPIRE HELD AREAS AT THAT TIME. AN AGGRESSIVE GENERAL OF
ALEXANDER THE GREATS ARMY,

BACKGROUND:
PRELIMINARY GREEK PRESENCE IN SOUTH ASIA:
AROUND 328 BC, ALEXANDER THE GREAT CONTINUED HIS CAMPAIGN EASTWARD AND CONQUERED THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT AS FAR AS THE HYPASIS RIVER, AND ESTABLISHED SATRAPIES AND FOUNDED SEVERAL SETTLEMENTS, INCLUDING BUCEPHALA; HE TURNED SOUTH WHEN HIS TROOPS REFUSED TO GO FURTHER EAST.
THE INDIAN SATRAPIES OF THE PUNJAB WERE LEFT TO THE RULE OF PORUS AND TAXILES, WHO WERE CONFIRMED AGAIN AT THE TREATY OF TRIPARADISUS IN 321 BC, AND THE REMAINING GREEK TROOPS IN THE SATRAPIES WERE LEFT UNDER THE COMMAND OF GENERAL EUDEMUS. AFTER 321 BC EUDEMUS TOPPLED TAXILES, HE RULED UNTIL HE WAS KILLED IN BATTLE IN 316 BC. ANOTHER GENERAL ALSO RULED OVER THE GREEK COLONIES OF THE INDUS: PEITHON, SON OF AGENOR, UNTIL HIS DEPARTURE FOR BABYLON IN 316 BC.
THE INDO-GREEK KINGDOM
WAS A HELLENISTIC KINGDOM COVERING VARIOUS PARTS OF THE NORTHWEST REGIONS OF THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT DURING THE LAST TWO CENTURIES BC, AND WAS RULED BY MORE THAN 30 KINGS, OFTEN IN CONFLICT WITH EACH OTHER.
DURING THE TWO CENTURIES OF THEIR RULE, THE INDO-GREEK KINGS COMBINED THE GREEK AND INDIAN LANGUAGES AND SYMBOLS, AS SEEN ON THEIR COINS,
(THIS IS AN EXAMPLE)
AND BLENDED ANCIENT GREEK, HINDU AND BUDDHIST RELIGIOUS PRACTICES, AS SEEN IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL REMAINS OF THEIR CITIES AND IN THE INDICATIONS OF THEIR SUPPORT OF BUDDHISM.
THIS COIN IF FROM THIS ERA, A 2,300+ YEAR OLD HISTORICAL TREASURE.
FROM THE TAXILA MINT.
