    Description

    Ancient JUDAEA under Rome Herod Archelaus AE 1/2 prutah 4BC-6AD 13mm 1.3g H under prow / EON (Ethnarch) wreath
    RPC1 4916 Hendin 506/1197  superb black patina partially flat but nicely struck and rare as such
    Archelaus was Herod's eldest son by his wife Malthace. Herod willed his title to Archelaus, but it was not a hereditary title and therefore needed confirmation by Augustus. Archelaus was met by a large crowd of angry pilgrims (because of high taxes) and 3000 lost their lives which intensified the peoples hatred of him. Augustus edited the will and gave Archelaus only Judea, Samaria and Idumaea and gave the rest to his brothers Antipas and Philip. Archelaus died in 6 AD.  He can be found in the Bible in Matthew 2:22 and most likely Luke 19:14.
